Commitment to Pro Bono

At Nutter, we are committed to social justice and progressive social causes. Through our pro bono work, we are proud to continue Justice Louis D. Brandeis’ tradition of providing access to justice for those often denied an opportunity to participate fully in our legal system because of financial constraints.

We are privileged to be a founding member and challenge participant in the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Project. Law firms that become signatories to the Challenge commit to providing pro bono legal services to low-income and disadvantaged individuals and families and non-profit groups. Nutter strives for three percent of the firm’s annual client billable hours to be on pro bono matters.

Recent pro bono projects include cases referred to us by Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR), Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Veterans Legal Services, and Lawyers Clearinghouse. Our attorneys regularly staff the Civil Appeals Clinic with Volunteer Lawyers Project and answer questions through Mass Legal Answers Online. Nutter attorneys are frequently recognized for their commitment to pro bono service, including recognition on the Supreme Judicial Court’s honor roll and high honor roll, from the American Bar Association, and from Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s Excellence in the Law, among many others.

Beyond formal pro bono commitments, Nutter attorneys also engage in a wide variety of civic, charitable, educational, social, and political efforts in the communities in which they live and work. They hold leadership roles in both local and national charitable organizations.
