Nutter announced today that it has achieved Mansfield Certification status after completing the 12-month certification program. The designation recognizes law firms that have intentionally considered at least 30 percent women, attorneys of color, LGBTQ+ and lawyers with disabilities for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, and senior lateral positions.

“One of our top priorities is to select leaders within the firm, hire lateral attorneys, and develop client service teams from a broad and diverse pool. We are committed to fostering a work environment where people of all backgrounds and life experiences can grow and thrive in their careers,” said Nutter Co-Managing Partner Michael E. Scott. Co-Managing Partner Liam T. O’Connell stated, “While we are gratified to have earned this status, it represents only the first mile marker of our longer journey to greater equity, diversity, and inclusion.”

The Mansfield Rule certification also requires firms to be transparent in their internal governance, particularly as it relates to selection guidelines and job descriptions for existing management roles and committees.

Nutter’s diversity efforts are led by its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (EDI), which is co-chaired by partners Julia Satti Cosentino and Ian Roffman, and comprised of members of the firm’s Executive, Legal Personnel, and Hiring Committees. The EDI Committee establishes firm-wide strategy related to equity, diversity, and inclusion and directs the work of numerous subcommittees that create and implement initiatives promoting an inclusive firm culture. Members of these subcommittees include partners, associates, and staff.

The Mansfield Rule originated in the 2016 Women in Law Hackathon, which was hosted by Diversity Lab in collaboration with Bloomberg Law and Stanford Law School. Named in honor of Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, the initiative aims to boost diversity in the leadership ranks within the legal profession.
