Melissa Sampson McMorrow, chair of Nutter’s Tax Department and a partner in the firm’s Higher Education group, discussed the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on college endowments in the Boston Business Journal. In the article, “Trump's new college endowment tax eases burden on small schools,” Melissa pointed out that the new tax law will kick in at the start of the fiscal year starting in summer 2026 and underwent many changes on its way to passage. “This bill had many iterations as it was going through Congress, but the result is worse for some schools and better for others,” she said.

“What’s important to remember is that if you back up to 2017, endowments were not taxed at all,” Melissa continued, adding that legislation this large and costly is extremely difficult to repeal. “It would be really hard to go back.”
