John Hartog and Susan von Herrmann, partners in Nutter’s Private Client Department, were honored as 2025 Top Estate and Wealth Management Lawyers by the Daily Journal. This list recognizes attorneys who are shaping the future of estate and wealth planning in California. An accompanying special report highlighted Susan and John’s career paths, areas of expertise, and notable matters that they handled over the course of their careers.

“I grew interested in the emerging issue of estate planning for LGBTQ+ couples, who did not have protection under federal law,” said Susan. “There was a real need for estate planning because these couples had no other choice.” Susan was among the first private client attorneys to represent same-sex couples in California at the emergence of domestic partner rights.

John has spent nearly 46 years advising clients on all aspects of trust and estate planning. He stated, “I believe the essence of the trust and estate practice is people-oriented counseling. Beyond simply managing and transferring wealth, I counsel my clients through the process of both pre-death and post-death transfers – including the litigation that arises from family dispute resolutions.”
