Nutter senior partner Mary K. Ryan was named as the “Environmental Lawyer of the Year” in Boston for 2011 by Best Lawyers.

Best Lawyers compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys based on exhaustive peer-review surveys with thousands of leading lawyers who confidentially evaluate their peers. The current edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2011) is based on more than 3.1 million detailed evaluations. Those being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in the surveys and only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is chosen.

A former president of the Boston Bar Association who has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers for the last 20 years, Ryan’s extensive environmental litigation experience includes substantial trial and appellate cases in the state and federal courts and significant expertise in federal and state hazardous waste litigation, including CERCLA and Ch. 21E cases. Ryan was one of the lead trial counsel for AVX Corporation in the New Bedford Harbor PCB litigation and has handled environmental matters for companies such as ConocoPhillips and Whittaker Corporation, as well as for the City of Boston and the Boston Redevelopment Authority. Ryan is currently environmental counsel for the South Shore Tri-Town Development Corporation in connection with the redevelopment of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station into the smart growth, mixed use community of SouthField.
