Overview
John C. Leddy is a commercial litigation partner in Nutter’s New York City office. He advises clients on a wide range of global complex commercial litigation with a particular focus on the real estate, banking, sports, and insurance industries.
John represents clients from the boardroom to the courtroom, providing strategic advice on important business decisions and representing clients through trial. Clients often engage John for complex litigation in state and federal courts due to his substantial experience in the dissolution or restructuring of privately held corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships. John’s practice takes him nationwide, with recent actions in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Minnesota, among others. John also litigates in international arbitrations and has overseen international disputes for various clients.
Additionally, John is frequently engaged by lenders, investors, developers, and owners in litigation concerning complex real estate transactions; mortgage and UCC foreclosures, workouts and restructuring of real estate secured debt, bankruptcy (and bankruptcy alternative) proceedings, and judgment collection; joint venture and partnership disputes; mezzanine loans and intercreditor relationships; hotel development, financing, and operations; and land use and construction.
John also has extensive experience representing clients in insurance and reinsurance coverage disputes, regulatory compliance actions, and multinational reinsurance transactions. This includes representing traditional insurance carriers, businesses with significant self-insured retentions, owners of single parent-captive insurance companies, and members of group captives, risk purchasing groups, and risk retention groups. John advises clients on both a portfolio basis and large one-off disputes, including a recent favorable resolution of a substantial super-fund coverage dispute on the East Coast.

- Obtained eight figure judgment on behalf of not-for-profit client against former officers and directors for breaches of not-for-profit law and fiduciary duties.
- Obtained dismissal of claims against New York chartered bank in warehouse mortgage lending matter.
- Obtained dismissal of multiple actions and related guarantor litigation, leading to successful buyout of eight-figure property portfolio.
- Obtained dismissal of defamation claim against client related to religious arbitration dispute.
- Obtained favorable arbitration result on behalf of biotech client in dispute over intellectual property rights and accounting practices in pharmaceutical development matter.
- Conducted internal investigation into potential insider trading relative to large public merger.
- Obtained favorable settlement of various shareholder disclosure claims related to a bank merger.
John is active in the legal community. He serves on the Litigation Committee and the Sports Law Committee for the New York City Bar Association and is a member of the Irish American Bar Association of New York.
Prior to joining Nutter, John was a litigation associate in the New York office of a national law firm. Before that, he was an associate at a boutique litigation firm in Boston.
