In a Law360 Q&A, “Nutter Leader Eyes Fla. Growth, AI-Driven Billing Shift,” Michael Scott, Nutter’s co-managing partner, discussed the firm’s continued growth following its expansion in New York City, California, and Hawaii, as well as its adoption of artificial intelligence. Michael noted that “we recognized the landscape was changing in Boston with more of the AmLaw 100 firms coming into town and felt it was necessary for us to grow,” adding that the firm set a goal of growing revenue by about 7% per year and has exceeded it, at roughly 12% last year and 15% the year before.

Michael explained the decision to target Florida as the firm’s next market, citing demographics and the concentration of clients the firm already serves in Palm Beach. “When you talk about the two core strengths in terms of real estate and private clients, Florida has both of those in spades,” said Michael, who identified West Palm Beach as the focus. “The other thing that’s interesting about West Palm is it’s becoming sort of a Wall Street South, and that dovetails with our banking practice as well.”

He further stated that the firm has “been monitoring AI developments for the last three years” and has assembled a tactical task force to accelerate its adoption efforts, with two partners spearheading the initiative. “I feel like I can do a lot more and do it better with AI,” said Michael.

Looking to the future, Michael said Nutter is using AI to examine how it prices matters and to move toward value-based billing, mining the firm’s own data to build a fact-based formula for flat fees. Michael also stated that “I am a big believer in creating partnerships with our clients,” noting the firm is in it for the long run.
