Nutter announced today that Daniel P. Mulhern has joined the firm as a partner in its Corporate and Transactions Department and a member of its Public Policy group. Mulhern will focus his practice on advising public and privately-held companies on government relations, constituency building, strategic planning, and government enforcement and investigations. He will assist clients in navigating a wide range of legislative, regulatory, and community affairs.

“We are very pleased to grow our public policy practice with Dan and further build upon our government relationship capabilities as demand for these services continues to increase,” said Liam O’Connell, Nutter’s Co-Managing Partner. “We look forward to working together and warmly welcome Dan to the firm.”

Mulhern’s extensive background in the governmental sphere aligns closely with Nutter’s deep experience in matters involving public and private sector interactions and relationships. Prior to joining Nutter, he served as the Suffolk County First Assistant District Attorney in the office of Rachael Rollins, the former Suffolk County District Attorney of Massachusetts. In this capacity, he oversaw SCDAO’s trial teams and their handling of over 25,000 cases in courts across Suffolk County. Before that, Mulhern was a Senior Advisor to Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Director of the City of Boston’s Office of Public Safety, where he was responsible for establishing cross-agency and cabinet coordination to tackle the challenging and complex problems that lead to and perpetuate violence. Previously, Mulhern served as the Chief of the Gang Unit and the Safe Neighborhoods Initiative at SCDAO. He has also practiced as a Special Assistant United States Attorney and a prosecutor in Middlesex County and at the Attorney General’s office.

“Dan is a highly respected leader in Greater Boston with a unique understanding of the public realm, and his addition will further strengthen our public policy and government investigation practices,” said Michael Krebs, chair of Nutter’s Corporate and Transactions Department. “Dan’s counsel on public policy issues and regulatory matters will be a tremendous asset to our clients.”

Mulhern has been recognized locally and nationally for his work leading interdisciplinary, collaborative, and public-health-focused approaches to public safety. In 2012, the University of Massachusetts Boston presented him with its Robert H. Quinn Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in recognition of his contributions to significantly improve the quality of life in the Greater Boston area. Mulhern earned his J.D. from Suffolk Law School and his B.A. from St. Michael’s College.
