In a Law360 Q&A, “Nutter Co-Leader On Expanding To Calif., Hawaii And Beyond,” Michael Scott, Nutter’s co-managing partner, discussed the firm opening offices in California and Hawaii as well as its significant expansion in core practice areas. Michael noted that “the genesis really was the changing landscape of the legal market…what we decided to do quite concertedly was focus on expanding, deepening, and broadening our core practice areas with high quality lawyers in places we thought made sense for the firm.”

Michael explained the geographic decision to expand in the San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii, citing relationships the firm has grown with attorneys who have sophisticated practices that also align with Nutter’s values. “The core elements are that we want to work with people who have a long view on life and a long view professionally and are invested in relationships and making long-term commitments to each other,” said Michael. “We want an environment where the people know each other and like each other and as a result do better business together. It’s all based on bonds of trust.”

He added that Nutter’s leadership has “always valued our firm for the culture and tried to preserve a place that’s different from BigLaw and offers lawyers a place to practice at the highest level but in a place that’s collaborative and entrepreneurial.”

Looking to the future, Michael said that Florida is an attractive market for private client, real estate, and corporate work. Michael also stated that “we’ve also been looking at markets like Chicago and Texas” in response to demographic trends.
