Situation with Client: Lallemand Inc. is a global leader in the development, production, and marketing of yeast, bacteria, and specialty ingredients. Founded in Montreal at the end of the 19^th century, the company began expanding throughout North America, Europe, and Africa by buying, consolidating, and expanding yeast plants. When Lallemand first looked to enter the United States in the mid-eighties, it engaged Nutter for legal counsel at the recommendation of its Montreal counsel.

Action We Took: Nutter has handled most of Lallemand’s legal needs in the United States for decades, advising on a wide variety of matters. Nutter represents Lallemand when they acquire businesses nationwide. The firm oversees Lallemand’s international trademark portfolio and manages patent prosecution and enforcement. Nutter also counsels Lallemand on licensing and joint ventures.

Result: Lallemand has successfully grown its yeast and bacteria operations throughout the United States, with plants today in Maryland, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and North Dakota, and developed new markets and products related to human and animal nutrition, brewing, winemaking, alcohol production for spirits and fuel ethanol, savoury and baking applications as well as plant care. Helped by the company’s success in the United States, today Lallemand is present through plants, distribution centers, or representation offices on five continents and over 40 countries.
