Steven Saunders, co-chair of Nutter’s Intellectual Property Department, wrote an article titled “Five Misconceptions Executives and Engineers Have about Patents” in CIO Applications Magazine. In the article, Steven discusses five myths about patents he’s encountered during his law career – “I have a patent so that I can sell the product,” “a patent is a technical document,” “never search before filing a patent application because it is dangerous,” “software is not patentable,” and “my technology is provisionally patented.” Steven shares his personal experiences with some of these myths as a patent attorney and angel investor, and provides tips on how to approach such situations. According to Steven, “Careful consideration of business strategy is key to ensuring a patent has value.”
