Natalie Choate, a member of the firm’s Trusts and Estates Department, was quoted in “Looking to 70 1/2, a Magic Number in Retirement Plans” in The New York Times on February 11. The article discusses the fact that individuals who turn 70 ½ in any year given have the option of waiting until April 1 of the next year before they must start withdrawing cash from I.R.A.’s and 401(k) plans. “The general rule is you might as well take it early in the year and get it over with,” said Natalie B. Choate. Otherwise, you might forget — or even die, which is a particular problem if you haven’t imposed any intended restrictions on your heirs.
