Deborah J. Manus, co-managing partner of Nutter, was selected as a 2013 Lawyer of the Year by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly on January 21. Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly published a special section celebrating the varied accomplishments leading to the selection. Deb was particularly noted for her work leading the committee that crafted a long-awaited revision to Massachusetts’ spousal elective share statute. “As if her responsibilities as co-managing partner of Boston’s Nutter McClennen & Fish aren’t enough,” Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly states, “Deborah J. Manus also has been leading an ad hoc committee that has studied and proposed a new spousal elective share statute for Massachusetts, which was endorsed in 2013 by the Women’s Boston and Massachusetts bar associations.” While describing the complexities and controversies of the long-debated issue, and the accomplishment of consensus being reached after eight years, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly recognizes Deb’s critical role: “…the fact remains that Manus has led the bar to as close as it’s been in decades to fixing the flawed statute.”
