Natalie Choate, a member of the firm’s Trusts and Estates Department, was featured in “Hitting the Bottom Line” in InvestmentNews on May 13. Natalie discusses the implications for financial advisers and their clients now that the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 has passed.

She notes that the new act divides the estate-planning world into three groups: the rich, the poor and the middle. She goes on to say for the poor — those with less than $5 million — the estate tax exemption is the whole story and for the superwealthy, the exemption is meaningless. However, for the middle, say, married couples with $5 million or $10 million, the portability of the exemption is huge, especially if the couple's assets are heavy in retirement benefits.
