Overview

Thomas J. Lavan is a registered patent agent in Nutter’s Intellectual Property Department. He advises clients on all aspects of patent prosecution and counseling, with a particular focus on communications, data storage, and software technologies.

Tom regularly assists inventors, technology startups, and companies of all sizes on how to protect and maximize their IP assets. He has extensive experience in drafting invention disclosures, U.S. and international patent applications, office actions, and appeals. Tom also conducts prior art searches, manages foreign counsel, and handles continued prosecution of patent portfolios.

Prior to joining Nutter, Tom was the president of a patent preparation and prosecution business. Earlier in his career, he worked on design engineering and engineering management at Hughes Aircraft Company, AST Computers, Dell Computer, Adaptec, Chaparral Network Storage, and Dot Hill Systems.
