Expertise

Nutter’s Private Client and Nonprofit and Social Impact groups provide a wide range of services to high net worth individuals and families, as well as to the charitable organizations they support.

Nutter’s Private Client Department has provided expert guidance in financial and estate planning, trust and estate administration, and related probate proceedings for more than a century. Our trusts and estates attorneys are distinguished for their attentive service and tradition of excellence. We counsel high net worth individuals and families, structuring plans to advance client goals, optimize tax results and preserve wealth.

We act as legal advisors and, in many cases, fiduciaries, providing services as personal representatives, trustees, and guardians. We consistently take a big picture approach, assuring that immediate and long-term implications of decisions are balanced, while not losing sight of the details of individual and family interests.

Our trusts and estates clients count on us to develop personalized estate plans to minimize taxes and preserve assets for future generations through charitable and noncharitable giving, intra-spousal transfers and the use of lifetime trusts, preparation of wills, insurance trusts, GRATS and other testamentary dispositions of property. We assist in tailoring financial plans and retirement benefits to meet our clients’ individual objectives and needs in a changing tax climate. And we offer estate planning services for nonresidents holding assets in the United States, as well as for U.S. citizens with substantial assets abroad.

Our attorneys help clients preserve capital and facilitate the transfer of wealth after the death of a family member by assisting with the administration of estates and the analysis of post-death tax planning options, and by serving as executors and trustees, which includes handling probate and similar proceedings, fiduciary accounting, and preparation of income and estate tax returns. We provide representation in probate and other courts involving equitable relief, will contests, estate disputes, partitions of property, and actions for removal of fiduciaries.

The Nonprofit and Social Impact practice group provides a wide range of services to non-profit organizations, as well as individuals and businesses who contribute to such organizations. Among the firm’s clients are national and local public charities and private foundations, as well as generations of philanthropic families. In addition to our legal advice and expertise in strategic planning, we offer investment advisory, trust accounting and tax preparation services to our charitable clients.

We advise individuals and families in virtually every area of philanthropy, whether in structuring a gift to an established organization or in creating and funding an entirely new organization, such as a private foundation. Our team works closely with founders, boards of trustees and often the next generation to develop giving programs that will make an impact and achieve our clients’ charitable goals.

Our services to private foundations are comprehensive. We advise on all aspects of private foundation operation, from formation, to grantmaking and impact investment, to assisting with the reorganization, merger or winding down of the entity in some cases. Our attorneys, charitable foundations manager, trust department, tax accounting department and other staff members provide a full complement of support throughout the grantmaking and reporting processes.

Through Nutter Investment Advisors (NIA), a wide range of investment advisory services are available to our charitable clients. NIA has over $1 billion in funds under management and its investment professionals are committed to tailoring an investment strategy that meets the client’s goals for the financial security and growth of his or her charitable endeavor.
