Overview

Michael P. Visconti, III is a partner and the Deputy Chair of Nutter's Intellectual Property Department. He is a member of the Life Sciences and Medical Devices practice group and also serves on the firm’s Hiring Committee.

Mike’s practice involves all aspects of intellectual property law, including patent portfolio development and strategy, IP litigation, and post-issuance patent proceedings. He also advises clients on copyright, trademark, and licensing issues, and performs design-around, diligence, and clearance studies.

Experienced in a broad spectrum of technical areas, Mike has prosecuted patent applications in the fields of consumer electronics, computer systems, software, medical devices, surgical procedures, filtration media, building materials, internal combustion engines, radar systems, MEMS, semiconductors, encryption, database architecture, and sensors. Mike works with clients to develop a “big picture” patent strategy for protecting commercial products, covering competitors, and managing global portfolios. He uses a practical and collaborative approach to develop IP assets that support the client’s business objectives and maximize competitive advantage.

Mike also has extensive experience in post-issuance patent proceedings, representing both patent owners and patent challengers in inter partes review (IPR), ex parte reexamination, and inter partes reexamination proceedings.

Mike has authored numerous articles and is a frequent presenter on IP issues ranging from patent eligibility of computer-implemented inventions to claim drafting strategies and patent reform.

Prior to law school, Mike worked for EMC Corporation as a hardware design engineer. While attending law school, he served as an editor of the Intellectual Property and Technology Forum Journal and was a member of the Business and Law Society.

Mike is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Boston Patent Law Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Boston Bar Association.
